Community update - Benbuck View

Community update - Benbuck View

At around 9.30pm on Monday 18 May, we were made aware of ground movement at Benbuck View in Coalsnaughton.

The Council is working alongside our partners, Scottish Fire and Rescue, Police Scotland, and the Mining Remediation Authority in response to this incident.

The site was secured after residents from 30 private properties were evacuated safely. No-one was injured.

The Mining Remediation Authority is currently carrying out detailed investigations to determine the cause of the incident and any potential risks.

We know this has been a worrying time for residents and families. We are working closely with our partners, including the Mining Remediation Authority, to understand the ground movement affecting the homes, while keeping people safe, and providing clear updates as more information becomes available.

What we know

There have been signs of ground movement in the Benbuck View area. As a precaution, 30 homes have been evacuated while experts carry out investigations of the issue.

What is happening now

The area has been secured while inspections continue. Structural engineers and other specialists are assessing homes, surrounding ground conditions, and local services such as gas, water, and electricity where needed. We are aware that the water has been disconnected and gas and electricity suppliers are currently undertaking disconnections. We are also working with our partners, including the Mining Remediation Authority, to support residents and to make sure decisions are based on the latest safety information.

Support for residents

If you have been affected, please follow advice and only return to your property when it is confirmed safe to do so.

Devonvale Hall is currently open daily from 9.30am to 5pm where Council officers are on hand to offer support and guidance as residents navigate next steps, including contacting their insurance companies.

We have arranged for CAB staff to be on site and are currently setting up direct digital communications with those affected. We have also prepared some frequently asked questions and answers to share with residents.

We understand people will continue to have questions about homes, belongings, and next steps.

We will continue to share updates as soon as we have confirmed information from in the first instance, the Mining Remediation Authority, and other partner agencies when we get them.

Residents meeting

A private meeting with residents is planned and invites will be sent directly to those affected.
