Some children and young people need additional support to fully access education. When children or young people require provision that is additional to, or different from, that provided to their peers, they are described as having additional support needs (ASN).
The additional support needs of all children and young people in Clackmannanshire Schools and Early Learning Centres (ELCs) are identified and addressed using the Staged Intervention process.
If you feel your child requires additional support, the first step is to discuss your concerns with your child’s class teacher, pupil support teacher or early learning centre educator (ELCE). They will explain about the Staged Intervention process and discuss with you what additional support may be available.
It may be that some minor changes to support within the school will be enough, but it may be that your child is placed on Staged Intervention and a Team Around the Child (TAC) meeting is organised.
It may be that your child needs further assessment: this might be from the school additional support for learning teacher or from other agencies. This will be managed through the staged intervention process. Ask your school if there are assessments you feel your child needs.
Schools/ELCs might refer to agencies out with school but within education include Sports Development, Educational Psychology, Community Learning and Development, education outreach teams (ASD, teachers of deaf/visually impaired, ESOL and Clackmannanshire Support Services).
Schools/ELCs might refer to professionals or agencies out with education such health professionals, social work, housing or third sector organisations such as Home Start, Action for Children, Barnardo’s, Women’s Aid etc.
Your child might have many different people involved in their support and care. Find out more about the roles of those staff via the Enquire website.
