Clackmannanshire Council uses national speed limit guidance to set speed limits on all the roads within Clackmannanshire. A number of factors are taken into account when setting speed limits. These include:
20 mph limits are predominantly used in urban areas - at schools, in town centres or within residential areas.

These benefits have led to the introduction of our Residential 20mph Programme. This programme will see 20mph limits/zones introduced on all residential streets within Clackmannanshire. We expect this work to be complete by Spring 2015.
30 mph is the standard limit in towns and villages.
Where there is street lighting, the speed limit is 30mph, unless there are signs to indicate a different limit.
40 mph limits can be used on roads where there are a high number of bends, junctions, accesses, where there is substantial development, where the road has a predominantly local or recreational function or in semi urban areas where the level of development does not meet the criteria for a 30 mph limit.

50 mph limits can be used on rural roads where there are a high number of bends, junctions or accesses and where the mean speed is already below 50 mph.

The national speed limit for cars and motorcycles is typically 60 mph on single carriageways and 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways.

In Clackmannanshire we have introduced a number of walking, cycling and riding friendly roads. These are quieter rural roads where traffic speed and volumes are low.
These roads have specially designed limit signs and aim to remind drivers that they are likely to see walkers, cyclists and horse riders in these locations.
