Literacy across learning

Literacy across learning

Literacy is fundamental to all areas of learning, as it unlocks access to the wider curriculum. Being literate increases opportunities for the individual in all aspects of life, lays the foundations for lifelong learning and work, and contributes strongly to the development of all four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence.

Delivering literacy across learning means that all teachers will help learners to improve their literacy skills by creating opportunities which extend pupils' experiences of reading, writing, talking and listening. The literacy expectations will be the same across all curricular areas. For example, written reports of scientific experiments and reports of social studies investigations will share the same literacy outcomes.

Literacy also enables children and young people to describe their own understanding of their learning, feelings and thoughts.
