Photogtaph - Alva Primary SchoolAlva Primary School was built in 1976. It is a co-educational, non-denominational school and the only primary school in Alva. The aspect of the school is enhanced by views of the Ochil Hills and by a burn running through the school grounds. The community of Alva has privately owned houses and local authority housing.

The original school building contains classrooms, a self contained Early Learning and Childcare Centre, library, PE hall, dining area, ICT suite, music room/resources room and ancillary office accommodation. A new extension was completed in early 2002, comprising 6 classrooms, large GP room and ancillary accommodation. Extensive work to improve our school grounds is about to be undertaken thanks to funding from the Council and participation in a pilot scheme involving Grounds for Learning, a planning group from the Parent Council. Pupils and teaching staff will be responsible for driving this initiative and will involve all of the school community.

A controlled door entry system is installed to secure the nursery, community area and main entrances.

We believe in working in partnership with parents and encourage parents to be involved in their child's education. Workshops are arranged for parents and create an opportunity for them to become more aware of developments in the school and parents are welcomed to a number of school functions during the year.

The Parent Teacher Association is very active and organises many successful social and fundraising events throughout the school session.

There is a Parent Council which meets regularly and is actively involved in a wide range of school issues.

We have a democratically elected Pupil Council which meets regularly to discuss concerns and issues raised by the pupils. P3-7 pupils are represented on the council.

In Alva Primary we work hard as a team to create a secure and positive learning environment where each pupil feels valued and is encouraged to learn. We promote a sense of community and recognise the importance of each individual pupil in our school.

Staff work hard to provide high quality learning and teaching experiences. They actively promote an atmosphere of achievement and attainment and give consideration to the progress of all pupils.

We provide a broad based curriculum incorporating Language, Mathematics, Environmental Studies, Expressive Arts, Religious & Moral Education, Personal & Social Development and the use of Information Technology.

The school staff have implemented a writing programme that is popular with both pupils and staff. Attainment has improved as a direct result of this development work.

Use of our local environment is encouraged and Alva Primary has recently attained a second green flag which flies proudly from our flag pole.

Recently we were awarded Health Promoting Schools Status 2 as a result of our efforts to make our school community more health conscious.

A residential programme is offered to P7 pupils, as part of the transition process for the move to Alva Academy and is undertaken jointly by all schools in the Hillfoots cluster.

Pupils also have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sporting and expressive arts activities during the school year.

Alva Primary has links with a school in Nigeria and a number of schools in Europe.

A wide range of after school activities take place including rugby, athletics, basketball, swimming club, running club, music club, Scripture Union club and visits to international football matches.

We are pleased to meet with parents and visitors who are interested in any aspects of our school.

Our School Handbook is available via our website.
