Subject to certain exceptions, food businesses that sell products of animal origin to other businesses require the prior approval of the competent authority. Products of animal origin include fish, shellfish, meat, poultry and dairy products, etc.
The approval process is designed to ensure these food businesses meet additional food safety requirements applicable to these products.
Approval does not apply to businesses selling solely to the ultimate consumer (eg retail sale).
A local authority may authorise an officer to inspect all food premises, approved or not.
Food business operators shall place products of animal origin manufactured in the Community on the market only if they have been prepared and handled exclusively in establishments that meet the relevant requirements of Regulation EC852/2004, Regulation EC853/2004 and that have also been approved by the competent authority.
No. It is in the public interest that the authority must process your application before it can be granted. If you have not heard from the local authority within a reasonable period, please contact them. You can do this online here if you applied through the UK Welcomes service or use the contact details below.
