Community Wealth Building

Community Wealth Building

Community wealth building is an approach to local economic development. Emerging first in the USA it has been taken forward by the Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES) within the UK. It is a people-centred approach to local economic development, which redirects wealth back into the local economy, and places control and benefits into the hands of local people.

Community wealth building forms a central theme of the Scottish Government’s Programme for Government and National Performance Framework, as part of the National Mission to Create New Jobs, Good Jobs and Green Jobs. The Scottish Government is working with five areas to produce bespoke community wealth building action plans. These are Clackmannanshire, South of Scotland, Glasgow City Region, Western Isles and the Tay cities.

During the autumn of 2020 CLES worked with the Council and partners to develop a Community Wealth Building Action Plan for Clackmannanshire. A progress report was approved in March 2023, showing work to date on the 21 actions.
