Overview 

HMP Glenochil prison is a Scottish Prison Service establishment located near Tullibody. It holds adult men serving both short-term and long-term sentences.  

Clackmannanshire Council’s justice social work team has staff based within HMP Glenochil. The team works alongside the Scottish Prison Service to

  • assess and manage risk 
  • support people’s return to the community 
  • prepare people for release 
  • promote public protection 
  • reduce the risk of reoffending 

The social work team work in partnership with Scottish Prison Service and community based Social Work colleagues in delivering services to meet these aims. 

Eligibility 

Prisoners do not go straight to Glenochil prison directly from the Courts but are admitted following conviction, from other prisons. 

Justice social work services at Glenochil prison are provided to those

  • serving custodial sentences at Glenochil prison 
  • subject to statutory supervision following release 
  • preparing for release back to Clackmannanshire

Service specifics 

Justice social work will 

  • provide reports to the Parole Board for Scotland focussing on risk and risk management and making a recommendation regarding a prisoners' suitability for release
  • complete risk assessments on prisoners using the appropriate national risk assessment tools
  • complete all statutory duties set out by relevant legislation in respect of all prisoners who are subject to supervision following their release
  • carry out any relevant tasks relating to child protection
  • work in partnership with other agencies including the Scottish Prison Service, the NHS and community based colleagues to ensure a joined-up approach to the management of a prisoner's sentence, interventions aimed at addressing offending behaviour and meeting needs
  • work with Scottish Prison Service and community colleagues to plan and prepare for a prisoners return to the community
  • carry out structured one-to-one work with relevant prisoners aimed at addressing and reducing offending behaviour

Process 

If someone is serving a sentence at Glenochil prison: 

  • They may be allocated a justice social worker depending on their sentence type and supervision requirements
  • They will meet with their worker to complete risk assessments and discuss release planning
  • If they are eligible for parole, a report may be prepared for the Parole Board
  • Before release, a supervision and support plan will be agreed
  • If they are subject to statutory supervision, they will continue working with justice social work in the community
