Civil Marriage / Civil Partnership: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Civil Marriage / Civil Partnership: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Our aim is to help you through the process of arranging the registration of your civil marriage or civil partnership. If you have any further questions or you would like to arrange a ceremony, please contact the Registar.

Do we have to be resident in Clackmannanshire?

Anyone can arrange to have their ceremony in Clackmannanshire providing both parties are 16 years of age or over, and are otherwise not prevented from entering into a civil marriage or civil partnership.

When should I make initial contact with the Registrar?

Bookings can be made up to 2 years in advance. Please contact the Registrar as early as you can to secure the preferred date for your civil ceremony. If you plan to hold your ceremony at any venue other than the Registration Office, please contact the venue first to discuss availability and costs before contacting the Registrar.

Is car parking available near the Registration Office?

There is ample car parking near the Registrars office at the Speirs Centre.

How much will it cost?

Please contact our Registration Office for details of current fees.

What time should we arrive?

10-15 minutes before the time appointed for your ceremony is sufficient time for you and your guests to arrive. The Registrar may have other ceremonies to attend so it is important that all ceremony participants arrive on time.

What information will the Registrar require from me?

The Registrar will need to know some details to personalise your ceremony.

For example:

  • will there be attendants?
  • will there be one ring or an exchange of rings?
  • would you like a verse or poem incorporated into the ceremony?
  • the number of guests you will be expecting
  • will you be using recorded music or live music?

Should we arrive together?

Whether the principal participants in the ceremony (and guests) arrive together is a choice which is entirely yours. The Registrar will try to accommodate your decision.

Can I be given away in the Ceremony?

Certainly. This can be built into the ceremony if you wish.

How long does the ceremony take?

The ceremony will normally last around 25 minutes but this depends upon the size of the ceremony party and whether or not you choose to include readings.

Are guests allowed to throw confetti?

Yes, but please use confetti outside only.

Is it permissible to smoke within the Registration Office?

There is a general no smoking policy in public areas in all of our buildings.

How do I contact the Registrar?

Please see the Registration homepage for opening hours and contact details.

Can I have my photographs taken?

The Registrar will allow time for photographs immediately following the ceremony.
