Self-assessment & Continuous Improvement

Self-assessment & Continuous Improvement

We use various methods to assess how things are going and identify how we can improve.  This is important for providing assurance to the Scottish Government and our customers that we are working well to deliver better outcomes for our communities.

Public Service Improvement Framework

We use PSIF to self-assess and support improvement, including with the Clackmannanshire Alliance and individual Council services.  This is a structured framework for evaluating:

  • What's working well;
  • How our performance compares to others;
  • What our customers have to say; and
  • Where we need to improve.

In spring 2024 we undertook a corporate self-assessment with support from the Improvement Service PSIF team.  This informed preparations for other Best Value audits, as well as telling us where our strengths lie and helping us plan and define what improvements we need to make to ensure our services remain fit for purpose.

Data Maturity Assessment

We were one of ten selected local government and public sector organisations led by the Scottish Government to undertake a Data Maturity Assessment in 2024.  We hold a large amount of data so needed to know our current maturity level, and where we could improve to get more value from our data.  We're using the findings to inform our transformation journey and develop a Data Strategy.

Annual Governance Statement

Services complete a Governance review each year to ensure that appropriate and adequate internal controls are in place within their respective areas to improve the effectiveness of the Council's governance framework (see Local Code of Governance).

Additional Arrangements

There are additional service-specific self-assessment arrangements, such as in Education and Social Services (People Directorate) some of which have the option of independent validation.  We're also involved in a wide range of national networks, with colleagues across different sectors who're dealing with the same issues and challenges, to support and learn from each other, and share creative solutions.
