Digital Champions

Digital Champions

Digital Transformation is part of our Be the Future programme and as we embark on this exciting journey, which includes the move to Microsoft 365, we’re looking for volunteers to become digital champions to help support the work.

The digital champion’s role will be to help colleagues across the organisation to improve their confidence, motivation and digital skills for work. This may be helping someone get to grips with making a video call on Microsoft Teams, accessing e-learning or uploading a document to the cloud.

You may already be an informal digital champion, helping your family, friends, service users or team mates with getting to grips with digital devices and tools. This is an opportunity to formally recognise your skills and support role.

Initially the main focus for digital champions will be in supporting colleagues as they become familiar with Office 365 which will change the way we do every day work activities like sending emails, the way we communicate and accessing and sharing documents.

The roll out of Office 365 will involve introducing one new application at a time. Training for each application will be broken down into a series of readiness sessions focusing on key features. Digital champions will attend readiness sessions and in turn share training with their colleagues via Teams video call. They will be the main points of digital contact for their service area offering ongoing guidance and support.

We are aiming that each directorate will have several Digital Champions. Following the implementation of Office 365, the digital champion role will broaden to cover digital life skills and wider digital skills.

What skills do I need to become a digital champion?

  • Friendly, approachable, and eager to help others learn new skills
  • Ability to run short digital sessions about specific systems, processes, technologies or best practice
  • Able to explain things in simple terms
  • A good listener
  • An understanding of people’s interests and motivations for learning
  • Passionate about the positive impact digital skills can have on people’s lives and work
  • Patient and adaptable
  • Confidence in their own digital skills
  • A good understanding of online safety

If you require support from a Digital Champion, you can email anybody from the list available via Connect.

How can I benefit from being a digital champion?

  • There will be training and learning opportunities to allow you to grow in your role and keep learning new things. This may include gaining a formal qualification through an online course developed by SCVO and Glasgow Kelvin College.
  • An opportunity to build your confidence and develop your own digital skills.
  • You will be part of a growing community of digital champions across the Council and Scotland.

How much commitment will I be expected to give as a digital champion?

  • Microsoft 365 knowledge sharing programme will entail 2.5 hours per week commitment. This involves 1 hour attending the Readiness session, 1 hour preparing and sharing session with colleagues and 30 mins debrief meeting with the project team to assess and evaluate. However, this is only during the go live phases of the project, during other times it expected the commitment will be less.
  • Microsoft 365 sessions will be held using Teams video call. However, going forward support sessions with learners can take place in person (subject to Covid guidance) or remotely over the phone or video chat.
  • Some learners may need help on a regular basis, eg once a week, while they get to grips with a new skill or platform. Others may only need a one-off support session to improve an existing skill. Time commitments can vary depending on the person and their needs.
