This is a free 3 hour workshop for Kinship Carers living in Clackmannanshire in partnership with Children's Health Scotland.
Meltdowns and emotional outbursts can be overwhelming—for both the child and the carer. This workshop provides insight into why these behaviours occur and offers calming techniques that can be used before, during, and after a crisis. Carers will leave with a toolkit of strategies to help children feel safe, understood, and supported.
Kinship carers often support children and young people through moments of high stress, uncertainty and emotional overwhelm. Many children in kinship care have experienced changes, losses or difficult relationships that make it harder for them to regulate their feelings or communicate their needs calmly. This can lead to meltdowns, shutdowns, or big emotional reactions that feel challenging for both the young person and the carer.
This workshop has been created specifically with kinship carers in mind. We explore why these emotional responses happen, what they communicate, and how practical calming techniques can support children and young people to feel safer, more grounded and more understood.
You will learn simple, realistic strategies you can use at home — grounding tools, sensory-based techniques, supportive communication approaches and ways to reduce overwhelm before it escalates. These techniques can be used before, during, and after a crisis, helping to create a calmer, more connected family environment.
There will also be space to reflect on your own wellbeing as a carer, recognising that supporting a child through big emotions can be emotionally demanding.
This is a relaxed and supportive session with no expectation to share personal experiences. The focus is on understanding, practical skills and calming tools you can use in everyday family life.
To gain better knowledge and understanding of calming techniques and how these are relevant to the health and wellbeing of care experienced children.
To improve your understanding of why calming techniques are important in supporting you and those in your care.
To be better able to support children and young people in your care and help them access appropriate services when needed.
To improve your understanding of children’s rights and health rights.
This workshop is for kinship carers — including grandparents, aunties, uncles, siblings and family friends raising a child or young person within their family or community.
Professionals are welcome to attend to help support the kinship carers they work with.
