Kinship Carer training - Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing

Clackmannanshire - Thursday 22nd October 2026

This is a free 3 hour online workshop for Kinship Carers living in Clackmannanshire in partnership with Children's Health Scotland.

Care experienced children are significantly more likely to face mental health challenges. This workshop helps carers understand common conditions such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), and offers tools to support emotional regulation, build self-esteem, and foster a sense of safety and belonging. It also explores how carers can look after their own mental health while supporting others.

About this workshop

Kinship carers often step in during challenging times, offering stability, love and familiarity when children and young people need it the most. Many children who come into kinship care have already experienced disruptions at home, changes in relationships, or situations that have left them feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or unsure of themselves. These early experiences can affect their behaviour, emotional responses, and how they cope with everyday situations.

This workshop is designed specifically with kinship carers in mind. We explore the mental health challenges that many care experienced children and young people face, why certain behaviours or emotions may appear, and what practical approaches can help them feel safe, understood and supported.

You will learn calm, realistic strategies you can use at home — from helping a young person manage big emotions to building trust and confidence over time.

There will also be time to reflect on your own wellbeing as a carer, recognising the emotional demands and pressures that kinship care can bring.

This is a relaxed and supportive session with no expectation to share personal experiences. The focus is on useful knowledge, understanding and tools you can apply in everyday family life.
