Over 150 primary school children took part in the 4th Annual Clackmannanshire Primary Schools Swimming Gala at the Alloa Leisure Bowl on Friday 11th March.
Teams from 19 local schools sent teams selected from P5, P6 and P7 to this popular competition including Lochies School who took part for the third year running.
This year saw the introduction of an event for children with additional support needs. Medals were presented by Joan Spencer, the Co-ordinator of Enhanced Provision within the Outreach Department of Clackmannanshire Council. She was delighted with this addition to the programme and said: "It is wonderful to see how absorbed they are in this type of event. For some of our children it is a huge personal achievement for them to participate in this event. The sense of satisfaction they have achieved today is wonderful."
Stephen Johnston from Tillicoultry Primary took the gold with David Sweeney (Lochies School) and Claire Robertson (Fishcross Primary) taking Silver and Bronze respectively. Also making the final were Ryan Ramage (St John's Primary), Claire Watt (St Serfs Primary) and James Cochrane (Lochies School).
Roberta Gault, the Chairperson of the Clackmannanshire Primary Schools Sports Association, presented the medals to the other lucky winners. She said: "Once again the Primary Schools Gala proved to be an exciting event, displaying great effort and sportsmanship by all participants. The ever improving quality of the finals is a magnificent tribute to the children and to the coaching staff on the Primary Schools Swimming Programme."
Mr Ian McNicol, Headteacher at St John's Primary School, presented the Top School Shield on behalf of Clackmannanshire Council to Alva Primary who accumulated the most points throughout the event. Second place was shared by Claremont Primary and Tillicoultry Primary with Sunnyside closely following in third place.
Councillor Bobby McGill, a great supporter of local school sport festivals, said: "It is wonderful to see the children leaving the Alloa Leisure Bowl with their medals and big smiles after having a thoroughly enjoyable time."
Congratulations to all the swimmers who took part.
Thanks must go to all the Sports Development team, staff from the Alloa Leisure Bowl, Alloa ASC volunteers, pupils, teachers and school team helpers for helping make this such a success.
