Clackmannanshire residents are invited to make nominations to their community councils this month.
There are 16 places available on Alloa Community Council; 14 places each on Alva, Clackmannan, Dollar, Menstrie, Sauchie & Fishcross, and Tillicoultry, Coalsnaughton & Devonside Community Councils; and 12 places on Muckhart Community Council. Nominations open today, Wednesday, 6 August.
If you are on the electoral register in Clackmannanshire, you are eligible to stand for election to your community council.
You also have the power to nominate someone you feel can represent the community at this level of local democracy.
Each nominee needs two people or ‘subscribers’ to support them.
A community council represents a broad spectrum of the community so it is likely that everyone has something to contribute.
Provost Donald Balsillie, like all councillors, works regularly with community councils on many aspects of Council and civic business.
He said: “Community councils have a vital statutory role in liaising with the Council to ensure local views are considered and are an important sounding board in my role as a local Councillor.
“Much of their work is often unseen and as a result people may not be aware of how much they achieve on behalf of their communities.
“They are involved extensively in negotiations with the Council and other statutory agencies about matters affecting services in their area and play a valuable role not just in channelling information to and from their communities but in developing and proposing improvements to the local area.
“If you want to play your part as an active citizen, this is a great opportunity to get involved.”
Notices are going up at key locations throughout Clackmannanshire inviting residents to make nominations to their community councils.
For an informal chat about community councils and what’s involved in becoming a community councillor, go to the Speirs Centre at 5.30pm to 6.30pm on Monday,11 August; from 10am to noon on Wednesday, 13 August; and from 2pm to 3pm on Thursday, 14 August, when our community council liaison officer will be holding drop-in sessions.
The closing date for nominations is 4pm on Thursday, 21 August.
