Community Council Nominations Open for Alloa and Alva

Vacancies in two of Clackmannanshire’s community councils are to be filled through an election process which will run over the coming weeks.

Alloa Community Council and Alva Community Council are inviting the residents of their areas to stand for election to become community councillors.  Alloa Community Council seek to fill 9 vacancies and Alva Community Council has 4 vacancies to fill.

These elections are designed to put local residents in control over who represents the views of the area in the matters which concern them, and residents will see the direct result of taking part within a few weeks.

The process for filling vacancies on a community council is unlike that for other types of community groups.  In order for community councils to maintain neutrality in the election of members, Clackmannanshire Council administers the two-stage election process on their behalf, so anyone who is eligible to be a community councillor in their area whether they have had any prior contact with the community council or not can secure a nomination.

Nominations need a nominee, a proposer and a seconder who fill out a nomination form.  Anyone who is over the age of 16 and who appears on our electoral roll in the community council area can stand, propose or second.

Provost Donald Balsillie said: “Community councils make a significant contribution to civic life.  The part they play in representing the interests of their areas and safeguarding and improving the quality of community life sometimes goes unseen, and is all the more admirable for that reason.  Giving time and effort to the work of your community council is just one way in which residents can meaningfully drive and contribute to collective efforts to improve their communities.  I would recommend anyone who is wondering if they should become a community councillor to take the next step and get a nomination form”.

Notices about interim community council elections are going up at key community locations in Alloa and Alva inviting residents to make nominations to their respective community councils.

Closing date for nominations is 4pm on Thursday 13th October 2022.  For further information or to obtain a nomination pack, please contact: the Elections Office, Clackmannanshire Council tel: 01259 452266 or email: elections@clacks.gov.uk or see our website.
