Clackmannanshire Council (24 October) agreed a plan to integrate local police services, currently based in Alloa Police Station, within the Council’s headquarters at Kilncraigs. The plan is now subject to approval from the Scottish Police Authority (SPA).

The aim of the proposal is to enhance the extensive partnership working which is already in place between the two organisations, and deliver public services which meet the needs of our local communities in a more integrated way.

The report to Council follows a business case which summarised the main opportunities of the plan, which include:

  • access to services for citizens
  • developing closer working relationships and preventative initiatives between Council services, police and partners
  • reducing costs to the public purse
  • responding positively to climate change

The agreement follows public consultation where community views were shared and detailed discussions took place with service users and staff from the Council and the Police.  A business case explored these issues and concluded that there were significant benefits to the proposals, and that mitigation measures can be put in place to significantly address most concerns.

Cllr Helen Lewis, Spokesperson for Partnership & Third Sector said: “This proposal represents an innovative transformational opportunity for the Council and Police Scotland, for the benefit of our communities.

“Crucially, it enables more coordinated and preventative earlier interventions for our most vulnerable citizens, providing the support they may need as soon as possible. It also offers significant financial and sustainability benefits, and reflects the priorities of our corporate plan to develop new and innovative ways to help our communities flourish.”

Approval to proceed must be granted by both the Council and the SPA before the project can be implemented. The SPA is currently expected to consider a similar business case later this year.
