Over 800 children took part when Clackmannanshire Council played host to the Primary School Cross Country Leagues in September, October and November in Cochrane and Johnstone Park in Alva.

The three series event is a competition where individuals and school teams compete to collect the most points and be crowned league winners.

The three races of the series saw the P5, P6 and P7 children from 16 different primary schools tackle a new course of hills, path and grass for just one mile. The weather stayed dry and sunny on all three occasions which made for very good running conditions.

A great crowd came along to watch the event which made for an exciting atmosphere. All the young competitors ran exceptionally well with some fierce competition, especially in the Primary 7 girls and Primary 6 boys categories.

The Young Ambassadors, Scottish Disability Sport staff and Sports Development Staff helped organise, setup, marshal and manage the results for the event. Ochil Leisure Centre gave support by providing a sheltered space for the results team.

The next event is the Clackmannanshire Primary School Sport Association Cross Country Championship which is on the 10th December 2013 at Cochrane and Johnston park, Alva. This event is used as a qualifier for the regional primary schools cross country championships, and the winners will represent Clackmannanshire on 4th March 2014 in Alva. Everyone is welcome to come along and support the young runners.

For any children interested in athletics, Sports Development have three Run, Jump and Throw classes for 5 - 9yrs olds throughout the week, and a Development Squad on a Monday night at Lornshill Academy for 9 year olds plus. For more information contact Sports Development on 452330 or sportsdevelopment@clacks.gov.uk

Older pupils have also been running cross country, with 130 secondary school pupils from Alva, Alloa and Lornshill Academies competing in the Clackmannanshire Secondary schools Cross Country Championships at Cochrane Park, Alva in November.

Pupils competing in six events according to age and gender, and despite the cold weather the event was a big success with some excellent performances and some very close finishes. The pupils, staff and spectators helped to create a great atmosphere by cheering on all of the participants.

The event was a qualifier for the Forth Valley Schools Cross Country event, which will be hosted by Clackmannanshire Council at Cochrane Park, Alva on 4th March 2014. From the Clackmannanshire Championships the top 20 girls and boys in S1/2, S3/4 and S5/6 will represent Clackmannanshire.

The Council's Sports Development staff set up and organised the event and Young Ambassadors and senior pupils assisted with marshalling.

The accumulated results for the individual runners of the Primary League and the Secondary Schools Championship can be found below.
