Redwell Primary School badge and uniformThe new school badge and the colour of the school uniform - navy blue - has been unveiled for Redwell Primary.

Pupils and teachers from both Claremont Primary and St John's Primary Schools attended the uniform showcase event recently at Alloa Town Hall along with specially invited guests representing Clackmannanshire Council and the local community.

The event was organised and led by children from Primary 3 and 5 at Claremont and Primary 3/4 and 5 at St John's. These classes have been working co-operatively over the past five weeks as part of a design project culminating in the revealing of the new badge and uniform.

Ten children, five from each school, have been working in groups, taking part in a series of challenges based on the television show 'The Apprentice'.

Every week a pretend Lord Alan Sugar set the groups a challenge on their quest to research and design the new badge.

Tasks included carrying out market research in local shops, visiting local design companies, interviewing design students from Forth Valley College and exploring the history of Alloa's textile industry.

The Apprentice groups then used their new skills and knowledge to design school badges which were voted on by the rest of the school.

The uniform showcase was the final challenge, where groups presented their designs, celebrated their teamwork and revealed the winning badge.

The pretend Lord Sugar revealed that the winning team was 'Spirit' whose badge included a red well and two olive branches to represent two school communities merging. The team comprises a mixture of children from each of the schools.

Education, Sport and Leisure Convener, Councillor Ellen Forson said: "This design project is a good example of interdisciplinary learning within Curriculum for Excellence.

"The context was meaningful and relevant to the children, their was a focus on developing transferrable skills across different curricular areas, the children worked with many local business partners and they gained a deeper understanding of the world of work by exploring design related career paths."

The project was part of the comprehensive education plan in place to bring together the two school communities of Claremont and St John's and was a fabulous opportunity for children and staff from both schools to work together to develop learning and teaching and shape the identity of the new Redwell Primary.
