Citizen of the Year Finalists Announced

The Lord-Lieutenant Trust met this week and the panel of judges announced the eight finalists, one of which will be named the 2012 Clackmannanshire Citizen of the Year.

The prestigious Clackmannanshire Awards evening, when the winner will be announced, will take place at Alloa Town Hall on Thursday, 21st February, the event to be hosted by Provost Tina Murphy.

The judging panel, chaired by The Rt Hon Sir George Reid, announced the eight finalists as: Caroline Crawford, Elizabeth Brand and Carrie Snaddon (joint); Shona Malcolm, Alison Mann, Linda McLeod, Teresa McNally, Ian Russell and John Wynne.

Caroline has worked with the voluntary sector for over 40 years, involved with Menstrie Community Council, CVA, Forth Valley Hospital and many more. Elizabeth Brand and Carrie Snadden volunteer tirelessly within Park Primary School. They have worked amazingly hard to help develop a healthy tuck shop within the school, which is innovative while, at the same time still follows nutritional health guidelines.

Shona officiated at The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games / Volunteering in Athletics Shona has been officiating in the sport of athletics for 32 years. In the Commonwealth Games in Manchester Shona was the youngest official. She has given most weekends in the last 32 years to the Sport. In addition to officiating she coaches non disabled athletes with Central Athletics in Dollar, which she has done this for over 20 years, and Forth Valley Flyers which is a club for people with disabilities weekly for the past six years

For the past 18 years Alison has been a crucial volunteer and source of support for Muckhart Primary School. Her youngest son left the school nine years ago and where, for most people that would mark the end of their support for the local school, Alison is still a valued, respected and loved volunteer.

Linda is the chairperson of Breathe Easy Clackmannanshire and although her own health is not at all good, , she works extremely hard to raise awareness of lung disease and Breathe Easy and she also delivers support to fellow sufferers.

Teresa is a well known in the community who has served on numerous boards and organisations over the years, striving to help improve the situation for many people throughout Clackmannanshire.

Ian has been a very active volunteer in the Community of Alloa for many years, Ian, 81 has had a long standing involvement with the North Church as an Elder. He was a founder of Alloa Central Community Council and has taken a keen interest in the community.

John has worked with the Air Cadets in Clackmannanshire for many years and was the officer who started the Alloa Squadron on the Whins Road. John still attends the Squadron and helps out at events and is a great benefit to the Cadets

The current Citizen of the Year, David Hunter, received the title in recognition of his decades of voluntary service to groups and organisations in Clackmannanshire.

This is the tenth year the Provost of Clackmannanshire will host the joint awards ceremony to recognise the dedication and commitment that local people and groups have made to help improve the quality of life throughout the county.

As well as the Citizen of the Year, the Young Citizen of the Year will be crowned for the first time, along with the winners of the Clackmannanshire Sports Awards.

Provost Murphy said: "I am delighted that we have created a new category of Young Citizen of the Year, targeted specifically at people under the age of 25 years. There are many young people that deserve to be recognised for their bravery, achievements or kind acts."
