Tullibody Scouts and Wee County Explorers have formed a very successful partnership with Abercromby Primary School ensuring further success for both organisations. In preparation for their John Muir Award, the Scouts approached the school to help support them in the development of their school grounds.

An army of Scouts and Leaders appeared at the school one Saturday recently to begin the construction of raised plants and flower beds at the front entrance to the school. The commitment and dedication of the young people involved, many of whom had no previous connection with the school, was truly inspirational. The planting will be undertaken by pupils later in the year as part of the school's Eco programme and Health Promoting Schools developments.

Headteacher Fraser Forsyth said: "I was delighted to be asked to support the Scouts in their project. This work will make a real difference to the school's Eco and Health Promoting Schools improvements and certainly help us deliver the four capacities of a Curriculum for Excellence. The opportunity to work with local groups is surely of benefit to the whole local community."

Scouts have been discovering and exploring Barrwood campsite near Denny throughout the year and the school project has enabled them to complete the conservation part of the John Muir Award.

Neil Haston, Scout helper, said: "All the Scouts enjoyed working together and were amazed to see what could be achieved in only one day. Although they were given joiner and landscaping instruction, most simply enjoyed the more routine clearing and digging tasks. "The Scouts are beginning to understand John Muir's contribution to conservation and look forward to further participation in the award scheme and hope to work with Abercromby Primary School again in the future."

Abercromby Primary School and Tullibody Scouts look forward to seeing the fruits of their labour in the spring and summer.

Education Convenor Councillor Ellen Forson said: "I am delighted to hear about the strong partnership working between Abercromby Primary, Tullibody Scouts and Wee County Explorers and the emphasis that is being placed on health and the environment in our schools."
