Clackmannanshire Primary Schools Sports Association (CPSSA) Athletics Championships were held at the Grangemouth Stadium for the eighth year on Thursday 27 May 2010. All 19 primary schools were represented with a total of 600 pupils from P6 and P7 participating. Again the Additional Support Needs (ASN) section grew, with a record 21 athletes competing.

This years event saw many Clackmannanshire records broken:

  • Cameron McCorgray of Tillicoultry Primary achieved a height of 1m 36cm in the P7 boys high jump to break the old record by 1cm
  • Robert Burns of Strathdevon Primary broke the P7 boys javelin record by an incredible 2m 43cm to set the new record at 25m 30cm
  • Megan Ely of Strathdevon jumped into the record books by reaching 3m 68cm in the P7 girls long jump, beating the old record, that had stood since 2001, by 21 cm

Megan and the Strathdevon Girls relay team scooped the P7 girls relay and, as a result, Megan collected the female athlete of the day award. The boys' award went to Cameron McCorgray from Tillicoultry Primary. Cameron was successful in the high jump and was part of the successful 4x100m relay team.

The school team first overall was Alva Primary who amassed a fantastic total of 122pts. In second place were Tillicoultry Primary with a creditable team total of 92pts and third placed went to Sunnyside Primary with 76 points. The small schools award went to Muckhart Primary.

On the day Councillor McGill, spokesperson for Sport and Leisure, presented medals and shields. He said; "Clackmannanshire has a strong culture of getting involved in sport for fun, health and fitness at an early age and the CPSSA embodies this. Thanks go to all the coaches, teachers, volunteers, athletics officials and sports development staff who trained the pupils in the lead up, and those who helped at the event."

Also in attendance was Liz Francis, SportCentral Athletics Development Manager, who commented: "This event is an excellent opportunity for the children from Clackmannanshire to experience the atmosphere of a large athletics competition at a top class venue. I have been very impressed with the attitude and commitment that the athletes have shown. This has resulted in many top performances."

Clackmannanshire Council's summer 'Zest' programme includes an athletics week from 12 to 16 July, 1pm to 3pm, costing £25 for the week. Anyone interested in this or athletics in general can contact Gavin Macrae on 01259 450000.
