Provost Derek Stewart has visited Aberdona Gallery to view the 'Wood Works' exhibition.

The exhibition, which runs until 1st July, features a wealth of wood work created by local and national artists.

Provost Stewart was welcomed to the gallery by potter John Maguire and community artist Margo Winning. John's pottery business is based at Aberdona, while Margo runs workshops at the gallery on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Aberdona Gallery for Artisans is home to a broad range of projects organised by the Council's Community and Cultural Service. Its workshop facilities are used by partners in Education and Social Work and courses in mosaics, glass engraving and woodcarving have been held recently.

Members of the Men's Peer Group, a local self help group for men experiencing depression and anxiety, have recently converted a derelict byre behind the main gallery into their own workshop space and meeting room.

Provost Stewart said: "I was very impressed by what I saw at Aberdona and interested to hear about the work artists are doing with a range of community groups."

The Wood Works exhibition has been drawn from an open submission and due to the overwhelming response, the display will change throughout the duration of the exhibition. New work will be arriving in mid June.

The work ranges from small objects such as pens and clocks to indoor and garden furniture from a range of wood sources showing a variety of techniques. All work is for sale with prices ranging from £15 to £7000.

Some of the work on display was made by first-time wood carvers who attended the wood carving course held in March and led by award-winning local artisan Richard Douglas.

The exhibition is free to attend and is open to the public from 10am - 5pm Mondays to Fridays and 11am - 4pm at weekends.
