Clackmannanshire Schools Reach for the Charts

Alva Academy and its associated primaries are releasing a CD single and starting a new dance craze! "The Haggis" will be released on 23rd March in aid of Comic Relief.

With the support of the BBC, the song and its video were recorded at their headquarters in Glasgow and on location at Alva Academy and six primary schools: Menstrie, Alva, Coalsnaughton, Tillicoultry, Muckhart and Strathdevon - resulting in a single with over 2000 voices at the chorus!

Staff and pupils in all schools hope to raise as much money for the charity as they can and be the first to reach the charts. Marketing of the song and the artwork for the CD cover are all being taken care of by the pupils at Alva Academy.

The song itself is a cheeky, catchy, silly song with an equally silly dance - think of Agadoo with a kilt and you won't be far off! "The Haggis" was choreographed by Kate Wyman and written by music teachers David Clifford and Stuart Clyde.

David said, "The song united every pupil in Alva Academy, as well as those in the surrounding primary schools in a unique joint venture. It was an amazing experience for all involved."

Everyone can track its progress and add support at www.myrednoseday.com/haggis

The song has been backed by celebrities and MSPs alike. Keith Brown, local MSP, said "I'm delighted to support pupil initiative. My copy is on pre-order and I wish it every success!" Stephanie Willemse, the current Miss Scotland, added her vocal talents to the single too and appeared in the video. She said "recording the single was great fun, especially as it will help to raise money for Comic Relief."

HMV are backing the single and will be stocking the CD at their Stirling branch from its release on 23rd March 2009. It will also be available for digital download, with all profits going to Comic Relief.

Here is preview of the lyrics:

Verse:
Scotland's got a dance for you, it's funky and it's new,
So don yer kilts and fill yer boots, we're bringing it to you.
You can do it on yer own, in pairs or do it in a crowd,
But wherever you do it, you gotta do it proud.

Chorus:
Show us yer haggis, raise your right arm to the sky,
Stand on one leg, flip it round and shout "och aye".
Saltire for Scotland, and hoik it to the right,
And grab yer neebor's shoulder, and nessie through the night.
