Wardens on the Look-Out for Illegal Bonfires

Clackmannanshire's community wardens are working with local communities to make the county safer in the run up to Bonfire Night.

The wardens are a key part of Operation Alamo, an initiative involving the police, fire and three local authorities which gets underway on Wednesday (October 29). The multi-agency initiative, which runs until Bonfire Night on 5th November, aims to tackle those behaving in an anti-social or irresponsible manner.

The wardens have been mapping unauthorised bonfire sites from previous years and are already on the look out for the build-up of bonfire material on these sites.

The advise to residents is not to build bonfires, but if a responsible adult decides to have a controlled and well organised bonfire on private land, the wardens are happy to offer advise about how to keep everyone safe.

For example, bonfires should be at least 18 metres away from houses, trees, hedges, fences, sheds and cars.

The wardens are distributing safety leaflets and will be out on patrol on Bonfire Night.

Wardens will remove unauthorised and illegal bonfires with the aim of preventing injuries on Bonfire Night.

Paul Hamill, Community Warden Supervisor, said: "We don't want to spoil peoples' fun, but rather they were safe around bonfires and fireworks."

To report illegal bonfires call the Council on 450000.
