Feel good Friday at the Speirs Centre
Speirs Centre - Friday 29th August 2025 to Friday 5th December 2025
Join us for a programme of guest speakers and sessions which aim to show that there are many different ways to be active and involved in sport and exercise, whether it's participating, volunteering or spectating.
These Friday sessions will offer you the chance to learn, try something new and get social with a cuppa and blether.
Friday 29 August
- At Hame in the Ochils
- Book Launch. At the session today, hear from Alistair Spowage a former Mountain Rescue volunteer about his book 'At Hame in the Ochils'. Alistair will share his experiences climbing the 77 Ochil hills after discovering he had stage four prostate cancer.

- Friday 12 September
- Tales from the Ring
- The Speirs Centre is named after the local boxer Tommy Speirs. Tommy won the Scottish Amateur Lightweight Championship in 1929 and the Scottish Lightweight Championship in 1933 after going pro. We are joined for this session by Ian Mackintosh from the University of Stirling to hear more about their Tales from the Ring project featured an exhibition of boxing memorabilia curated by the University of Stirling Archives and the Scottish Ex-Boxers Association.

- Make Feel Heal
- During this session we will first discover how mindfulness and breathing techniques can affect our creativity, we will learn some tools and how to incorporate this into our creativity, before having a demonstration of the best tips and tricks of how to upcycle, and will even have the opportunity to get hands on with some of your newly learned skills

- Cup Finals
- Join us for a talk with Cliff Hague author of Cup Finals. Cup Finals weaves together tales of past and present heroes and villains, glory and tragedy, outrage and joy, thrills and scapegoats, plus ‘David and Goliath’ battles. Whether it’s the World Cup or the Scottish Junior Cup, a final is a special spectacle that creates legends. But in today’s corporate world, whose cup is it?

- History of Alloa Athletic
- Interested in local football? Join us for a talk with Alloa Athletic FC Historian John Glencross. John created the Alloa Athletic Football Museum which is full of programmes and memorabilia, celebrating the team.

- Friday 7 November
- Boccia
- Boccia is a Paralymic sport first introduced in 1984. Athletes throw, kick or use a ramp to propel a ball onto the court with the aim of getting closest to a 'jack' ball. It is designed specifically for athletes with a disability affecting locomotor function. It is played indoors on a court similar in size to a badminton court. Join us for a fun game at the library, where everyone can have a go!

- OTAGO Class
- Join us to try out an OTAGO class. This class is for people who have been identified as a falls risk or who may be becoming unsteady on their feet. The exercises are targeted at improving leg strength and balance to help individuals maintain their independent lifestyle.

- History of The Alva Games
- The Alva Games have been a date in the local calendar since 1845, join us for a talk with Craig Dunbar on the history of The Alva Games and learn more about what goes into organising this event.
