Tullibody Poor Records

Tullibody Poor (Relief) Book is the only one to have survived in Clackmannanshire and is a very useful source for anyone researching their family history.

Landowners (heritors) and church courts (kirk sessions) were responsible for looking after the poor after the Reformation. People eligible for poor relief were usually unable to support themselves, due to age or infirmity. Kirk sessions operated a 'poors fund', using income raised from various sources. The Poor Law Amendment (Scotland) Act of 1845 led to the setting up of parochial boards to administer poor relief. Standardised poor relief registers were introduced in parochial boards everywhere in 1865, but until as late as 1929 many heritors and kirk sessions continued to record poor relief.

From perhaps the late 17th century Tullibody had a poorhouse run by a private trust with a board of trustees. The Tullibody Poor (Relief) Book covers the period 1703 to 1892 and is a record of all expenses, including repairs to the poorhouse; payments to the sexton; medical, clothing and other payments for the poor; ropes for the bell and mort cloths for burials etc, as well as charges to those who could afford to pay for their own funerals. Ministers were not obliged to record deaths until 1855, so the book is an important source of this information.
