Clackmannanshire Council and our partners across Forth Valley are taking part in the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence campaign.

The annual campaign was set up in 1991 and calls for the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls.

The campaign takes place every year, starting on 25 November, The International Day of No Violence Against Women, and finishes on 10 December, Human Rights Day.

Throughout the 16 days, the Council is hosting and promoting a packed programme of activities, including events, stalls and training to demonstrate our commitment to prevent and eradicate violence against women and girls, as well as other gender based violence.

Awareness work with pupils is also taking place in our schools during the 16 days.

Lorraine Sanda, Strategic Director of People at the Council and chair of the Clackmannanshire Violence Against Women Strategic partnership, renewed a commitment to end Gender Based Violence, at the launch of the campaign.

Council leader Ellen Forson also addressed Council  on November 30, ahead of a video  being shown which highlighted the resources available to help staff and others recognise and address gender based violence.

Councillor Forson said: “Gender-based violence is never acceptable, and it is certainly not inevitable.

“Excellent work is already underway in our community and progress is being made, with domestic abuse incidents reported to police in Clackmannanshire down by almost 15%.

“However, much more work needs to be done if we are to achieve the goal of completely eradicating violence against women and girls.

“This year’s 16 Days is not only about our action in our own communities, but about recognising that worldwide, there are organisations and countries committed to this same goal.

“ As violent conflicts around the world continue, we know that the impact and trauma for women and girls is disproportionate and devastating.

“We all must commit to a fairer society where women and girls can feel equally safe, at home, at work and in their community.”
