Ninety children from 14 Clackmannanshire primary schools have played in the county's first ever schools qualifying badminton tournament.

Lornshill Academy and Tullibody Civic Centre played host to the boys and girls events respectively, where primary schools had entered their top three players in the singles and their top three teams in the doubles. School staff, parents and Active School co-ordinators worked with the children in PE lessons and extra-curricular clubs.

The boys singles event at Lornshill Academy was very competitive with a very high standard of play on show. The players from Menstrie PS dominated the semi-finals with three of the four competitors. Oliver McDonald from Menstrie PS beat Daniel Ferguson from St. Serf's PS to take 3rd place and the all Menstrie final saw Robbie Davis beat Ewan Purves 21-10 in a fantastic match.

The girls singles event was played at Tullibody Civic Centre and the four semi finalists were Katherine Martin from Abercromby, Cara Vickers from St. John's, Cera Neill from Tillicoultry and Jade Walker from Alva Primary School. After two closely fought semi finals, Katherine Martin beat Cera Neill to clinch 3rd place and Jade Walker took the girls singles title after beating Cara Vickers in the final 15-7.

In the boys doubles Robbie Davis and Oliver McDonald from Menstrie won a brilliant final against Jamie Conlon and Andrew Clarke from Alva to take the title. Leo Elliot and Mason Japp from Sunnyside narrowly beat Ewan Purves and Logan Downie to the bronze medal.

The girls doubles was a very close event with Cera Neill and Kaitlynn McEwan from Tillicoultry taking the title after beating Katherine Martin and Anna Swan from Abercromby in the final. Aleah Alexander and Cara Vickers from St. John's picked up the third place medal after edging out Abby Hanson and Darcy Baxter in the 3rd/4th place play off

The event was supported by 10 volunteer coaches and secondary school sports leaders who spent the day refereeing and officiating all the matches. Provost Tina Murphy and Education Convenor Ellen Forson handed out prizes.

The following pupils will now represent Clackmannanshire and their schools in the Regional Primary Badminton Championships in February 2014.
