Lornshill Academy Junior Awards Ceremony took place at the school last week with over 140 young people from S1, S2 and S3 receiving accolades in a ceremony attended by over 200 parents, carers and friends.

The platform party comprised of acting head teacher Ann Floyd, and retiring staff Ann Gardiner, Una Bryce, Rosie Shannon and Scott Neilson, who were all presented with awards.

They were joined on the stage by Council Leader, Councillor Gary Womersley and Education Convener Councillor Ellen Forson along with Bernard Kennedy, uncle of Scottish international rugby star Grant Gilchrist, a former pupil at Lornshill. Mr Kennedy presented two new rugby awards.

Other guests included Mike Clark from Alloa Rotary Club and Ally Reid, who collected a cheque on behalf of Yorkhill Children's Hospital, money raised by the Interact Group at Lornshill. The ceremony was conducted by depute head Jacqui Dunlop.

Following on from the Senior Award Ceremony in April, Councillor Womersley gave a first class address to the audience, speaking with feeling and affection about his own time at Lornshill Academy as a student.

Councillor Womersley said: "Having been at the school a few weeks ago to present awards at the senior awards I was delighted to return to perform a similar task at the junior awards. Prize giving at any school is a very special event and is the culmination of a year's hard work, effort and dedication at school and I would like to congratulate all of the winners."

Mr Kennedy presented two new sports awards in the names of his son Sean, a former student of Lornshill, and his nephew Grant Gilchrist who left Lornshill in 2009 and who recently received his first Scotland cap for rugby.

Both Sean and Grant delighted the audience by sending recorded messages that were played - one of them from South Africa where Grant is currently training with the Scotland Squad.

The ceremony culminated with Dux Awards, given jointly this year to Timothy Hilton and Mhairi Nimmo. Proxime Accessit was Morna Campbell.

Awards were made for citizenship, community, sport as well as for academic achievement.
