It's national food safety week next week - and the message this year is wash your hands!

And shock statistics show that 31% of men and 17% of women admit to not regularly washing their hands after using the toilet. And 26% of men and 17% of women say they do not always wash their hands before preparing food.

The Council's Environmental Health Service is organising a competition to get the message across about good hygiene.

Germs can stay alive on hands for up to three hours and can spread to everything you touch.

Although people think they know how to wash their hands, many of don't do it properly.

Here are some tips:· always use warm water. It's better to wet hands first before applying soap.

· rub hands together vigorously for about 15 seconds, making sure both side of the hands are washed thoroughly, around the thumbs, between each finger and around and under nails.

· rinse with clean water.

· germs spread more easily if hands are wet so dry them thoroughly with a clean dry towel or paper towel.

· Did you know?

1000 times more germs spread from damp hands.

· Hands should be washed before eating or preparing food and after handling raw foods; going to the toilet; gardening; or putting out the rubbish or handling pets.
