There was intense competition among Clackmannanshire primary pupils at the Clackmannanshire Primary Schools Sports Association (CPSSA) Athletics Championships held at the Grangemouth Stadium on Tuesday 26 May 2009. Everyone of the 19 primary schools were represented with a total of 600 pupils from P6 and P7 participating.

This is the seventh year this event has taken place at the excellent facility at Grangemouth. The track events included the 100m, 200m, 400m and a 4x100m relay, the field events consisted of long jump, high jump and turbo javelin. For the third year the event had an additional support needs (ASN) section in which a record 20 athletes competed. For the ASN participants there was the 60m walk, 100m sprint, javelin and long jump.

This year the event saw one Clackmannanshire record broken, with Laura Clarke of Alva Primary Schools achieving a time of 2min 45.74secs in the 800m P7 Girls to break the old record by some 8 seconds. Laura and the Alva Girls relay team scooped the P7 Girls relay and as a result Laura collected the female athlete of the day award. The boys award went to two athletes from Strathdevon Primary: Aaron Furzer and Michael Ross. Aaron was successful in his 400m event and Michael came first in the 100m, whilst both boys were part of the successful 4x100m relay team.

Throughout the event athletes accumulated points for their school and trophies were awarded to the winning and runner up schools. This year the school team first overall was Alva Primary who amassed a fantastic total of 115 points. In second place were Strathdevon Primary with a creditable team total of 83 points, pipping third placed Tillicoultry Primary with 80 points. There was a small schools award and this was shared with Muckhart Primary and St Bernadettes Primary, ending on the same number of team points.

On the day Councillor McGill, spokesperson for Sport and Leisure, presented medals and shields and observed much of the performances. "This is a great turn out," he said. "I am delighted to see all of Clackmannanshire's primary schools represented today. The children appeared to be enjoying a really positive experience and it is a credit to Clackmannanshire Council's Sports Development team that this event was so well organised. The children themselves have obviously been working hard over the last few months to prepare for this event, and my congratulations go to them, their teachers and coaches because they behaved wonderfully and performed to a very high standard."

Also in attendance was Sandy Robertson, SportCentral Athletics Development Manager who commented: "It was a delight to be at this event. I was so impressed by the standard of performance. The participant's determination and drive shown throughout each event was there for all to see and personally I thought that there was a lot of promising potential on show. I hope they will continue to develop as athletes."

This summer, for those interested in athletics, there is the ZEST Aviva Star:Track week from 13 to 17 July from 10.30am to 3pm with half days costing £25 for the week and full days £40 for the week. Anyone interested in this or athletics in general can contact Ryan Martin on 01259 222355.
