The 6th Scottish Gymnastics Regional School Heats took place at Tulligarth Community Leisure Complex, Alloa, on Sunday 30th November. This year there were over 250 gymnasts from primary and secondary schools competing. There were 45 teams from primary schools across Clackmannanshire, and 13 teams from secondary schools across Stirling and Clackmannanshire.
There were four different categories and the top two teams in each category qualify to represent Clackmannanshire at the Scottish Schools final at Bells Sports Centre, Perth, on Sunday 22nd March 2009. In previous years the representatives from these heats have competed well at the national finals with the Craigbank Primary level 2 team taking gold in 2007. Based on the displays last Sunday we are sure to again see favourable results at the national finals.
The event was organised by Clackmannanshire Council's Sports Development Team, with tremendous support from Hillfoots Gymnastic Club and Alloa Gymnastic Club with a particular mention going to Trisha MacDonald and Lynne Scotland for their technical input. Thanks also goes to the judges from Scottish Gymnastics for not only judging but for the feedback they provided to the gymnasts that will only help them to continue improving.
Alloa Gym Club member Andrew Mackie presented the medals and shields on the day. An international gymnast, Andrew has represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 and this year he was part of the Scottish team that took team gold in the Northern Euros. Andrew observed many of the performances and said: "This is a great turn out, I am so impressed. Its an absolute delight to see so many participating today and representing their schools. The gymnasts have obviously been working hard over the last few months to prepare for this event, my congratulations go to them, their teachers and coaches and also to their families for bringing them along today - they performed some excellent routines and looked quite spectacular."
