Events at the Speirs Centre

Speirs Centre - Friday 10th May 2024 to Friday 7th June 2024

The following events  which will run in the library at the Speirs Centre:

  • Friday 10 May, 1030-1130
    • David Stokes: Experience of wartime in the bush (Rhodesia/ Zimbabwe)
    • Between 1964 -1979 a civil war raged in Rhodesia bringing years of conflict and devastation to the area. The Rhodesian Bush War is also known as the Second Chimurenga or the Zimbabwe War of Liberation.  In the talk today David will share memories and personal experiences of this war and reflect on his time there.
  • Wednesday 15 May, 1400-1500
    • Susan Mills will present a talk on "Reading Pottery"
    • Former Museum and Heritage Officer Susan Mills will explore the story of Alloa Pottery and the wider regional ceramics industry, focussing on the backstamps and other identification marks on pieces in the Heritage Collection.
  • Tuesday 21 May, 1400-1500
    • Beltane Fire Society – a talk about traditional fire festivals
    • Members of the Beltane Fire Society, a leading arts charity, will visit the library today.  They organise 2 fire festivals a year – Beltane on 1 May and Samhuinn on 1 November.  Discover more about these traditional festivals and what it’s like to organise & participate in volunteer-led festivals in the modern day.
  • Friday 7 June, 1400-1500
    • Treasure Trove  - what to do if you find local treasure
    • Scotland’s Treasure Trove system is distinct among the legal frameworks that govern chance finds in the UK. All ownerless portable antiquities found in Scotland – from prehistoric flints to 18th century coins and much more – must be reported to the Treasure Trove Unit (TTU) and may be claimed and allocated to an accredited museum in Scotland.
    • This talk introduces the history of Treasure Trove, the current system and team, and discusses some of the more recent finds in the local area.
