Reading Group

Enjoy reading a range of novels? Join a small group to read and discuss a set list of novels. The group will meet once per month between May and October.

Monday 6th June: 11am-12.30pm

Writing for Wellbeing with guest speaker Helen Boden, poet and freelance writer  

Writing can help increase feelings of wellbeing and happiness. Come along to the café today and find out more about writing for wellbeing. 

The session will be led by Helen Boden, a poet and educator based on the edge of Edinburgh. Her writing is widely published in poetry magazines and anthologies. She also collaborates with visual artists.

She loves facilitating creative writing and writing for wellbeing workshops and has devised and delivered many programmes and activities in a wide range of cultural, social, environmental and healthcare settings.  

A pen and notepad will be provided to attendees at this session.

Illustration of books with guest speaker, Kate Leiper - artist and illustrator

Edinburgh based book illustrator Kate is fascinated by myths and folklore and is inspired by animals and nature. She specialises in intricate and detailed drawing.

Join the cafe to hear Kate discuss her book illustrating process, explore the depiction of stories in pictorial form, show how characters are created and developed and talk about what being an illustrator involves.

Yoga – philosophy, benefits, creativity with Patricia Ace, poet, writer, yoga teacher and therapist

If you have an interest in yoga, don’t miss today’s talk.  Practising yoga since the early 1990s, Patricia qualified to teach yoga in 2002.  Inspired by an keen interest in yoga philosophy and the therapeutic and healing applications of yoga, Patricia finds herself increasingly drawn to the tradition of Krishnamacharya and Desikachar. 

In her writing works, Patricia explores the female experience, motherhood, botanics and spirituality.

Red Kites of Argaty with Tom Bowser, journalist and nature writer

Birdwatching, spending time with nature or walking in the great outdoors can be a great way to relax and bring positive outcomes to our health. 

Red kites, graceful and aerobatic were once Britain’s most common birds of prey. After facing years of persecution, they were wiped out in Scotland by 1900s.

Hear about the project Tom and his family undertook to reintroduce these majestic birds at their family farm in Argaty, Perthshire.  

Tom, a journalist and nature  writer will also discuss his passion for nature and his dedication to conservation.
