Gaelic a traditional language for modern learners

Clackmannanshire Council's successful beginners and improvers Gaelic class continues to help encourage Gaelic language development locally.

Classes will take place in Sauchie Hall on Tuesday evening from 7pm to 9pm, beginning on the 8th March and will run initially for 8 weeks.

New learners and previous Gaelic beginners and improvers are welcome to attend.

Learning a traditional language has many benefits - it can expand your knowledge base, help to understand traditional cultures and develop language learning skills.Gaelic dates back to the earliest settlements in Clackmannanshire and leaves its traces in many of our place names.

Gaelic is still in use in many parts ofScotland and is growing in importance as the Scottish Executive is keen to support its development. In its modern form it finds many uses for day to day communication amongst native speakers and is increasingly being used in cultural and commercial life.

Formal courses in Gaelic can be taken to degree level in Scotland and the introduction of Gaelic medium teaching (teaching general subjects using Gaelic)in some schools is opening up opportunities to learn and to work totally in the medium of Gaelic.

Pre-school children in Clackmannanshire already learn Gaelic in a popular Gaelic playgroup operating in Menstrie.Clackmannanshire recently played host to a successfulGaelic language practice day run by Clì Gàidhlig at Alva Academy.

A Gaelic self support drop-in group runs in Clackmannan College on a Tuesday afternoon from 1.30 to 3.30.If you are interested in joining this small but friendly self support group of Gaelic learners then go along to the College on a Tuesday or contact Maggie Hannah on 01786 465124.

Anyone interested in registering for the beginners and improvers Gaelic class should contact Linda Hutcheon on 452437 or go along on the first night.
