Clamp down on illegal money lending

A new agreement will allow a hit squad of officers from Glasgow Trading Standards to raid premises in Clackmannanshire to investigate and clampdown on loan sharks.

The eight strong team is a key part of a national project aimed at stamping out illegal money lending.

" Loan sharks" exploit people with poor credit ratings by handing out loans at extortionate rates of interest and, when clients fall behind with repayments, often apply intimidation and/or threats of violence.

The Department of Trade & Industry has decided to call time on this situation by creating this team of officers who have the responsibility for investigating illegal money lending activities throughout Scotland.

Clackmannanshire Council has agreed to rules that will allow Glasgow officers to operate in the local area.

It means that they will have the right to exercise the powers detailed in the legislation including raids on land and premises.

Anyone who is a victim of a loan shark, or knows of a friend or family member who is affected by their activities, can call the confidential free Crimestoppers number 0800 555 111 and speak to a specialist officer.

The information gathered, plus information from undercover investigations, sometimes acting with the Police, will be used to stop this illegal trade and drive the criminals behind the activity from local communities.

Hugh Hamilton, Trading standards Team Leader said, "The added resource that this unit brings will lead to the investigation ofallegations of illegal money lending and provide better protection for the vulnerable members of the local community who are affected by this illegal trade. However they will need help from the local community to identify where and when it is happening."

"If you have any information please phone the free CRIMESTOPPERS number 0800 555 111. Everything you say will be strictly confidential."
