The Royal Regiment of Scotland is to exercise its freedom to march through Alloa on Saturday 30 September.

The Council bestowed the Freedom of  Clackmannanshire on the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland back in 2006.

This was the first time the county has bestowed its highest honour and was the first time the Battalion has been granted a 'Freedom' under their new banner of The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

The honour was bestowed upon the regiment by then Provost Derek Stewart.

Derek will also play a part in the event this time around, as he himself will be presented with the Freedom of Clackmannanshire to mark his illustrious 34-year service to the county.

Provost Donald Balsillie said: “I am very much looking forward to this special event, with a big highlight for me being the parade by The Royal Regiment of Scotland and other local organisations - a real spectacle to be enjoyed.

“By supporting the event it is also a way we can show our servicemen and women, cadets and veterans, how much we value them and their service.

“I am also very much looking forward to bestowing the Freedom of Clackmannanshire on former provost Derek Stewart to mark his outstanding service to community life and local democracy as part of the day's celebrations.”

The parade will kick off from Candleriggs at 11am and will travel through the town centre to Alloa Town hall via Auld Brig Road, King Street, Drysdale Street, Mill Street and Mar Street and Marshill.

These roads will be closed during the parade and residents are being invited to line the route and give support to the marching servicemen and women.

As well as the parade, the Regiment will have a recruitment stand and have interactive activities in the entertainment space at the top of High Street from 10.30am.

A veterans, charities and volunteer fayre, organised by Alloa First and CTSI, will take place from 10.30am to 2pm, also in High Street.

The Logistics Corps are bringing along a truck and a gazebo, which will be placed in Marshill.
