Clackmannanshire Provost Tina Murphy marked Holocaust Memorial Day by lighting a candle in the year which marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and the 20th anniversary of the Genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia.

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) takes place on 27 January each year, marking the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Since 2001, on this day the survivors of Nazi Persecution, and victims of all genocides are honoured and we are challenged to create a safer, better future.

Provost Tina Murphy said: "This year's Holocaust Memorial Day takes Keep the Memory Alive as its theme, and ensures that survivors' experiences are not lost to history, and that a new generation can engage with these important personal recollections of genocide.

"On this day, we learn from those who have experienced oppression during the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides. We each have an individual responsibility to ensure that differences are respected, and we can all contribute towards creating a safer, better future."
