Braehead Golf Club and a member of staff have been convicted of selling alcohol to non members, following the annual Fair Measure survey carried out by Clackmannanshire and Stirling Councils' Trading Standards Service last October.

The club and a member of staff were reported for offences under the Licensing (Scotland) Act.
When the staff member who made the sale and Braehead Golf Club appeared at Alloa Sheriff Court on 17 December 2014, they pleaded guilty to two of the six charges on the complaint, not guilty pleas were accepted from the staff member and the club for the two charges relating to using 25ml measures in a 35ml premises.

The staff member was admonished by the Sheriff on the weights and measure charge relating to serving short measure and was fined £150 under the licensing legislation for having served the officers.

Braehead Golf Club was admonished on the weights and measure charge relating to serving short measure and was fined £280 under the licensing legislation for having served the officers.

Enterprise and Environment Convener Councillor Donald Balsillie said: "The Council takes the enforcement of licensing regulations to protect our communities extremely seriously, and this case shows the consequences for those who do not follow the law.

"During the annual Fair Measure Project, private members clubs were included for the first time, and officers were concerned to see a number of them not taking the rules surrounding the sale of alcohol to non members and the sale of short measures seriously. Legally non-members must always be refused service unless in the company of a genuine club member, and officers will be carrying out further test purchasing exercises to deal with these issues, along with the sale of short measures. I'd encourage licensed premises in any doubt about their legal responsibilities to contact the Council's Trading Standards or Licensing staff."
