Brown Bins Rescue Garden Waste!

The Council's bid to increase its recycling rates is gathering momentum with the phased introduction of the County's first brown bins which gets underway on 1March 2004.

This means that the majority of the area's 21,000 households will soon have three opportunities to manage their waste - two for recycling and one for all other waste. The new brown bins can be use for garden/cardboard waste, the blue box/bag for paper, junkmail, magazines, cans, clear plastic bottles, glass and textiles. The existing green bin will stay for mixed, non recyclable waste.

Every council in Scotland must introduce separated waste collections to comply with its recycling targets. 76% of Forth Valley residents said that they would gladly recycle more waste if they were supplied with the means to do it.

Councillor Billy Calder, Convener of the Enterprise and Environment Committee said: "It's a time of great change in terms of waste management. A combination of the closure of the landfill site and compulsory waste diversion and recycling targets means that everyone has a role to play in creating a cleaner, safer environment.

"The Council has a responsibility to provide recycling services but each and every householder must take part if our environment is to be fit for future generations. Reduce, Reuse Recycle is our slogan - make it yours too!"

A massive £200,000 pounds will be spent up to 2006 across Forth Valley to raise awareness of new recycling arrangements - with £40,000 spent in Clackmannanshire alone so far.

Already a wide range of publicity material has been circulated throughout the County including posters, leaflets, radio advertising and an AdTrailer. The publicity campaign is being managed by the Scottish Waste Awareness Group (SWAG) following a householder survey carried out across Forth Valley in 2002.

Graeme Cunningham, Integrated Waste Manager added: "We will be one of the first councils to have a county wide service and will be well on our way to meet 2006 recycling targets. We expect to double our recycling rate to over 12% by this time next year and with recycling opportunities available to the majority of householders we can make Clackmannanshire an environmental leader."

The delivery of the brown bins is set to get underway on 1 March with 5,000 bins going out each week over a four week period, with the first collection starting two weeks later on 15 March. More leaflets will be delivered to households at the time of their brown bin delivery. Collection arrangements have been changed to reflect the new service.

They are:

  • Brown bin for garden and cardboard waste - collection starts two weeks after brown bin delivery
  • Green bin for mixed waste - will change to fortnightly collection
  • Blue box/bag for mixed recycling waste -will change to weekly collection.
