The Lornshill Community Sport Hub is having a positive impact on local sports clubs, staff, pupils and residents a report to the Education, Sport and Leisure Committee has said.

Sports Hubs are a key part of the Scottish Government's 2014 Commonwealth Games Legacy for local communities. Their purpose is to increase participation in sport and physical activity by bringing groups together with the principles of growing participation, engaging the community, encouraging community leadership and offering a range of sporting opportunities.

Among the programmes running at the hub, the Girls Football Academy is the only one in Scotland. Thirty six girls take part in the programme, mostly across S1 to S3. The Scottish Football Association fund this project and have recently attended a review of the academy where several pupils gave their positive feedback.

The hub has been a catalyst to enhance and drive school and community engagement. Positive relationships between the Faculty of PE, Physical
Activity and Sport, local sports clubs, Sports Development, Active Schools, Facility Management, pupils, staff and local residents have been maximised to the benefit of the community.

One of the key outcomes of the Community Sport Hub was the creation of a User Forum which is made up of representatives from the 11 member clubs, groups and organisations.

The partnerships and integrated approach has helped the school to make curriculum changes which form better pathways for specific sports such as basketball, badminton and trampolining.

Phase one of the initiative started at Lornshill Academy, has progressed to Alva Academy and will include Alloa Academy later this year.

Education, Sport and Leisure Convener Ellen Forson said: "It is key to increasing the health and wellbeing of our communities that they have access to local sporting opportunities, and our sports hubs are key to delivering this. I am pleased to hear in this report about the varied sports that are available to people of all ages at Lornshill, with plans to extend that work to our other academies."
