Gartmorn Dam will host its first duathlon race for junior and novice adults later this month as Clackmannanshire builds on its reputation as being a great place to get out and enjoy the outdoors.

The format of the race, which takes place on Tuesday 27th August, is a short run followed by a mountain bike section and finishing with another short run. Distances vary for the junior races depending on school-year groups whilst the adult race is a 2.5km run, a cycle lap of the dam (5km) and a final 1.7km run.

The junior race will start at 6pm with the adults starting at 7pm. Further details including how to enter can be found at www.entrycentral.com

The race is being organised by Clackmannanshire Council with funding from Event Scotland and assistance from Clacks Active.

The event is part of Games for Scotland - a nationwide programme of events designed to inspire, motivate, engage and engender pride in the people of Scotland in the run-up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The programme, managed by EventScotland, forms a key part of the Scottish Government's commitment to deliver a lasting legacy as a result of the Commonwealth Games coming to Scotland.

Councillor Ellen Forson, Education, Sport and Leisure Convenor, said: "I am delighted to launch the first ever duathlon at Gartmorn Dam which is an ideal setting for this sort of event. I encourage local cycling and running clubs and individual members of the public of all ages who wish to venture in multi sports to come along and give it a go."

Local triathlete and Clacks Active founder Sean McFarlane said: "The Alva Duathlon we ran earlier this year was a great success and in particular attracted a good deal of experienced athletes. The Gartmorn Dam race is a taster event aimed specifically at first timers and those who are looking to try something new this summer and maybe get into this type of sport, as well as offering kids from the surrounding areas a chance to have a go at something different. Gartmorn Dam is a fantastic venue for all sorts of outdoor pursuits and we hope this race will encourage an increase in its recreational use by showing competitors and spectators alike some of what it has to offer."
