Alloa Academy finished runners-up overall at the at 8th annual Forth Valley Disability Sports Athletics Championships, which took place at Grangemouth Sports Stadium last week.

A total of 116 primary and secondary aged pupils from across Forth Valley took part in the championships with Clackmannanshire represented by 48 pupils from Lornshill Academy, Alva Academy, Alloa Academy and Lochies School with an amazing medal count.

This was a record secondary school entry from Clackmannanshire.

As well as the terrific medal tally Alloa Academy also took the runners up trophy for overall school.

Education, Sport and Leisure Convener, Councillor Ellen Forson said: "The event saw some fantastic athletics throughout the day with the best athletes qualifying to the national championships in July.

"Pupils from Clackmannanshire did their schools and the county proud. They performed fantastically well and gave it everything with some amazing results. There was a real team spirit amongst the schoolchildren. They did superbly well."

"I would like to commend all the hard work in the lead up to the event, and on the day, by our Sports Development team and the school staff. I would also like to thank Forth Valley Disability Sport for a fantastic day."

It was also announced this week that Scottish Disability Sport (SDS) has launched an exciting initiative in partnership with UK Sport, the British Paralympic Association and Scottish Institute of Sport.

Paralympic Potential is an exciting campaign to find athletes with an impairment who may have the potential, drive and passion to win gold at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.

SDS is looking for athletes who fit the following criteria: have an impairment; UK passport holder (or eligible for one); aged between 16 and 35 years old; a sporting background in any sport; and a desire, commitment and determination to win.

They are looking for individuals who have a sporting background in any form of sport. This can be non-disabled sport, for example sport played before acquiring an impairment or current participation in non-disabled sport, or disability sports that are not Paralympic sports. They are looking for talent in a variety of sports that can be developed in time to win medals in 2016.

Paralympic Potential Talent Assessment Days are being held at the Emirates Arena & Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th June.
