Organisers of the 2014 Commonwealth Games are alerting people in Clackmannanshire to volunteer opportunities for the events to be centred in Glasgow.

Hopes are high that Scotland can emulate the highly successful army of volunteers who served at the London Olympics earlier this year.

It is expected as many as 45,000 people from throughout Scotland, many of them from Clackmannanshire, will put their names forward as volunteers for the Commonwealth Games from 23rd July to 3rd August, 2014.

It is estimated that 15,000 volunteers will be required for the Glasgow games, so demand would likely outstrip supply by more than three to one.

Clackmannanshire Council's Convener of Sport and Leisure, Councillor Ellen Forson, said: "We would urge people in Clackmannanshire to visit the website and register their interest now and hope that they begin to think about how they could be involved as a volunteer at Glasgow 2014 and to help make a success of the biggest sporting and cultural event ever to come to Scotland."

Volunteers will have to give up some of their own time for training and will need to cover travel and accommodation costs, although there will be free public transport around Glasgow venues at Games Time.

Don't worry if you don't have any previous experience volunteering, training for each role will be provided. There will be specialist roles that need previous experience or qualifications such as sport or first aid. But the vast majority of roles don't require experience - just friendly folk who are committed to helping make this the best show that Scotland has ever seen.

Volunteers will have to give up some of their own time for training or take annual leave when the Games are on. And, they will have to cover their travel and accommodation costs, although there will be free public transport around Glasgow venues at Games Time.

Informal interviews will probably be the first opportunity to meet and speak with other potential volunteers, learn a lot more about what to expect if you are successful and tell them why you'd like to be involved.

Glasgow 2014 will be the biggest sporting and cultural event ever hosted in Scotland, being part of it is sure to be an unforgettable experience.

The Glasgow 2014 Volunteer Centre was formally opened this week as a base for the management of online applications from prospective volunteers.

It is expected that the application process itself will begin in mid-January 2013.

Prospective volunteers are being asked to visit The Glasgow Commonwealth Games website in the first instance www.glasgow2014.com where they will find answers to most questions they may have on volunteering.
