Councillors on Clackmannanshire Council's Enterprise and Environment Committee voted unanimously on Thursday to pursue acquisition of the former Alva Glen Hotel.

Councillors expressed their extreme concern over the appearance, condition and continued deterioration of the former hotel, which has in recent years become a major eyesore in the centre of the village.

They agreed to proceed after being told by officers that despite significant efforts involving the use of Statutory Notices, to convince the owners of the need to complete essential repairs, no positive action has been initiated by them to improve the appearance and condition of the building, which has a prominent position in the town's main Stirling Street.

To secure the redevelopment of this site would be a substantial positive step towards implementing the Council's Planning and Housing strategies on town centre regeneration., particularly as they relate to Alva.

Environment and Enterprise Convener, Councillor Donald Balsillie said: "The former Alva Glen Hotel in its present state presents a very poor image of Alva. We as a Council have a clear policy to regenerate our town and village centres and have allocated funding for this purpose.

"We will make the owner a formal offer and allow them a reasonable period of time to respond but If no agreement is reached we will not hesitate to initiate Compulsory Purchase Order proceedings. A further report will be brought to full Council by14th March, 2013, at the latest."
