Clackmannanshire Council's Community Wardens Team have slapped out seven £50 penalty notices to people in a crackdown on litterbugs.

Following the launch of the Clackmannanshire Council's litter campaign in September, the Council's Community Wardens Team have been out and about tackling those who have a disregard for the amenity of the area.

A total of seven £50 penalty notices have been issued so far for dropping litter and the campaign against the litter louts will continue. Most of the offenders were within a few feet of a litter bin.

Councillor Donald Balsillie, Convenor of the Council's Enterprise and Environment Committee said: "We have well publicised the Council's stance on tackling litter, so the message has gone out.

"If people choose to continue to ignore it they must face the prospect of a £50 fine from now on.

"Litter spoils the whole appearance of the area and it costs the Council to clear up behind these irresponsible people. It is only a minority of people who act irresponsibly. We are determined to work towards a cleaner and more attractive Clackmannanshire for everyone.

"Littering is totally unacceptable. Clackmannanshire is well served for litter bins so there is no excuse for anyone to drop rubbish on the ground."

It is not just the Council's Community Wardens who are authorised to issue penalty notices for littering. Other officers are authorised as well and on many occasions these officers will not be in uniform.

Councillor Balsillie added: "So before discarding that cigarette end or sweet packet think, if it may well cost you £50. Dispose of litter responsibly or take it home with you."
