Park Primary School in Alloa has scooped first prize of £1000 in the 'Harmony' section of a national citizenship challenge competition run by Grampian Police.

The competition called 'Learning for Life - Let's Celebrate Citizenship' invited schools to submit portfolios illustrating their work in one of five categories: active citizenship, positive relationships, positive involvement in the community, a link project or 'harmony; positive behaviours'.

The School will receive the award at a special ceremony at Stirling Management Centre on Thursday 12 June. They will stress that this work is not a one-off project but a continuing and very important part of life at the school.

Councillor Brian Fearon Convener of the Learning and Leisure Committee said: "I'm delighted to see Park Primary School receiving this award. The children's work is outstanding. The school has a strong commitment to helping youngsters grow up with positive attitudes and values about themselves and their community."

The school picked the theme of 'harmony: positive behaviours' to illustrate the wide range of activities in the school which promote positive behaviour.

Janet More, Acting Deputy Headteacher at Park Primary said: "Promoting harmony and respect are constant themes in our school. Personal and social education programmes help children develop the skills to get on with others and the buddy system and pupil council give them real opportunities to put those skills into practice."

The portfolio submitted by the school included a video of the pupil council election and photographs and reports about the school's 4Rs programme (that's reading, 'riting, 'rithmetic and respect).

The programme includes developing respect for self and others through caring for computerised babies, keeping classrooms tidy out of respect for your own place and the staff who clean it and showing respect for talents and skills through entering and voting for 'Park Idols'!

Joyce Swan, from Grampian Police and one of the judges of the competition, visited all the schools which entered. "The portfolio from Park Primary School just hit the spot,' she said, 'walking into the school, I could feel the good vibes."

The Let's Celebrate Citizenship Challenge is sponsored by Shell U.K. Exploration and Production (Shell Expro), Learning and Teaching Scotland and the Scottish Executive, and builds on Grampian Police's ground-breaking 'Learning for Life' resources.
