By this time next year £300,000 will have been awarded to projects to improve the environment of local towns and villages as part of the Civic Pride Initiative.

The Civic Pride Initiative was launched last year during the budget deliberations with a commitment to make £150,000 available each year for local projects.

In its first year a number of projects have benefited from awards ranging from £500 to paint the Tullibody Scout and Guide Hall to £10,000 for a new play area in Muckhart.

The Civic Pride Initiative awards several types of grant which include Community Projects, County Enhancements and Floral Displays.

Councillor Willie Alexander, Convener of the Enterprise and Environment Committee said: "The first year of the Civic Pride Initiative has proved to be a real success. Local people have taken the project seriously and have really worked hard, coming up with ideas and projects that would have a real impact on the local environment.

"Awards ranged from brightening up high streets with flowering baskets and floral displays to roads and landscaping improvements. It was a real treat to see the amazing display of spring flowers which have brought so much colour to the Clackmannan Bypass - a real example of how this money can work in improving the area."

The 2001 programme has set aside £50,000 to encourage joint working with other agencies which could see the amount invested into the county grow substantially. The floral display budget is set to increase to £25,000 with a further £10,000 committed to carrying out improvement on the War Memorials.
