As winter turns to spring and people's minds turn to gardens and repairs to property, Clackmannanshire Doorstep Crime Partnership, is warning people in Clackmannanshire to be cautious about agreeing to buy goods or services on your doorstep or allowing people you don't know into your home.

Clackmannanshire Doorstep Crime Partnership involves Central Scotland Police, Clackmannanshire Council Trading Standards, the Association of Scottish Neighbourhood Watches, Age Scotland and other partner agencies. The Partnership is encouraging consumers, particularly the elderly and the vulnerable, to exercise caution before agreeing to have work done or buying goods from doorstep callers.

Doorstep criminals target the elderly and vulnerable persons in our communities and a few simple steps can be taken to prevent becoming a victim.

The following advice is being offered in relation to unexpected doorstep callers.

Always check to see who is at the door before answering, look out the window for traders vehicles

If you are not expecting someone to call at your door, or are suspicious at all - don't open it, contact the police to pass the information on

Carry out checks into any leaflets that are put through your door, look for full contact address information. A good tradesman is usually a busy tradesman and doesn't have to resort to knocking doors

Be wary of special offers or warnings that your house is unsafe. Your local Community Police Officer can arrange for a free and independent safety and security check on your property

Don't make snap decisions and don't be afraid to talk to someone you trust before making a decision. Always obtain three independent quotes from different traders. A good trader will be happy for you to check them out. Check with family members, neighbours and friends and if you need work doing ask them to recommend someone they trust

Most utility (gas / water / electricity) companies offer a password identification scheme - contact the company to arrange this

If in doubt contact Central Scotland Police on 01786 456000 or Stirling & Clackmannanshire Trading Standards on 0845 277 7000.
